Shopify Editions 2026 So Far: What Gift Card Merchants Need to Know Before Summer
Shopify's 2026 changelog quietly shipped local currency gift cards, POS cash-out, and Apple Wallet updates. Here's what gift card merchants need to know.

Shopify Editions, Explained, and Why Gift Cards Rarely Make the Headline Slide
Twice a year, Shopify bundles up hundreds of platform changes and drops them all at once as an Edition. The most recent full showcase was the Winter '26 "RenAIssance" Edition, which shipped on December 10, 2025 with more than 150 product updates. Editions have historically landed on a roughly biannual cadence, summer and winter, according to community trackers of the release history.
Here is the part nobody says out loud: if you sell gift cards, the Editions keynote is almost never where your news lives. Gift cards show up as a passing mention, usually as a refund option or a store-credit adjacency, and then the highlight reel moves on to AI agents and checkout extensibility.
The actual gift card news ships quietly, in between Editions, through Shopify's changelog and its retail roundups. And in the first half of 2026, quite a lot of it shipped. This post covers what landed, why merchants had been asking for it, what it changes about how you run a gift card program, and what it still does not fix.
What Actually Shipped for Gift Cards in 2026
Local currency gift cards (May 2026)
This is the big one. As of a May 11, 2026 changelog post, Shopify lets you sell and issue gift cards in a market's local currency instead of forcing everything through your shop's primary currency. A customer in Berlin can buy a clean €50 card rather than a converted, oddly-rounded equivalent of your USD denomination.
There is a decision attached to it, and it is a permanent one. When you create the gift card, you choose whether the card is redeemable only in the currency it was issued in, or in any of your store's currencies. Per the changelog, that choice cannot be changed afterward. Think it through before you publish, because the cleanup path is voiding and reissuing.
New Admin API surface in version 2026-07
The same feature arrives for developers in the 2026-07 GraphQL Admin API. It adds a giftCardProductSet mutation along with issuanceCurrency and crossCurrencyRedeemable fields, and it deprecates initialValue in favor of initialAmount.
You do not need to care about the field names unless you are building something. You do need to care if an agency or developer maintains custom gift card automation for your store, which we will come back to below.
POS gift card cash-out (March 2026, POS v11.3)
From the March 2026 retail roundup, POS v11.3 lets staff cash out a gift card balance under $15 USD (or the local equivalent) straight from the gift card details screen. The action is recorded in the gift card's timeline and in cash management activity.
This one is compliance-shaped rather than marketing-shaped. Several jurisdictions require retailers to hand back small remaining balances in cash on request, and until now that meant a manual workaround and a note in a spreadsheet. Now it is a first-class action with an audit trail.
Apple Wallet passes and QR redemption
Shopify gift cards can be added to Apple Wallet as a pass carrying a scannable QR code, which means a customer can redeem in store without the physical card or a printout, per Shopify's gift card settings documentation and its own gift card management overview. If you run both a storefront and a counter, this quietly removes one of the most common friction points at POS: the customer who knows they have a card and cannot find it.
One honest caveat on the last two items. We went looking for merchant reaction to the POS cash-out and Apple Wallet features on Reddit and the Shopify Community and found essentially nothing. They are recent enough that the discussion has not caught up. Treat them as promising rather than battle-tested.
Why Merchants Have Been Asking for the Currency Fix for Years
The local currency update is not a nice-to-have that appeared out of nowhere. It closes a complaint that has been sitting in the Shopify Community for a long time.
Search the forums for multi-currency gift cards and you find thread after thread describing the same broken moment. A merchant sets up a $100 gift card. A customer shopping in a secondary currency sees it priced at some converted, non-round number, and the page reads as though they are buying a $100 gift card for $85. Customers get suspicious, carts get abandoned, and support tickets arrive. Merchants in those threads say plainly that they cannot believe there is no good native solution, and the usual answer they get is to go install a third-party app.
So the framing here is fair: Shopify has addressed something merchants have been documenting publicly for years. That is worth acknowledging clearly rather than grudgingly.
It is also worth remembering that not every Editions-era improvement reaches every store. After Winter '26, at least one merchant thread on r/shopify complained that a meaningful share of the headline features were gated behind higher-tier plans. Check what your plan actually includes before you build a roadmap around a release note.
What This Means If You Sell Internationally or Through POS
Four practical takeaways from the 2026 changes:
- Decide your currency strategy before you create the product. Issued-currency-only versus redeemable-in-any-currency is set at creation and cannot be reversed. If you have any doubt, model the two options against how your international customers actually shop before you commit.
- Re-read your notification and redemption copy. If you now issue in several currencies, the emails and redemption pages your customers see should state the currency plainly. Half of the old confusion was display, not math.
- Loop in your bookkeeper on POS cash-out. Cashing out small balances is optional per transaction, but every cash-out lands in the gift card timeline and in cash management activity. That changes your breakage picture, which is real revenue for most gift card programs, and it changes your till reconciliation.
- Flag the API deprecation to whoever maintains your integrations. Anything still writing to initialValue needs to move to initialAmount before adopting API version 2026-07. It is a small migration, but it is the kind that goes unnoticed until a gift card silently fails to issue.
If POS cash-out has you thinking about controls more generally, our gift card fraud prevention playbook covers the risk side of gift card operations in more depth.
What These Platform Changes Don't Fix
Here is the thing to be clear-eyed about. Everything above is currency, POS, and back-office mechanics. None of it touches the gifting experience.
Native Shopify gift cards still cannot be sent directly to a recipient instead of the buyer, still cannot be scheduled for a future delivery date, and still cannot carry a real personal message with the sender's name attached. We catalogued the full list in why Shopify's built-in gift cards aren't enough, and the 2026 updates do not remove a single item from it. If your use case is a birthday or an anniversary, scheduling gift card delivery is still an app-shaped problem.
That is also why the third-party category stays crowded. If you want the market view, the state of gift card apps on Shopify breaks down who is competing on what.
On our side, one small note for context rather than a victory lap: GoGiftCards has always tracked a currency code on individual gift card records and on each credit transaction it sends to Shopify, so the app is currency-aware at the card level. That is not the same thing as supporting Shopify's brand new issuanceCurrency and crossCurrencyRedeemable fields, and we are not going to claim it is. It just means multi-currency stores are not starting from zero here.
Looking Ahead to Shopify's Next Edition
Editions land roughly every six months, and Winter '26 shipped on December 10, 2025, so the next major showcase is expected around the middle of this year. We are deliberately not going to name it, date it, or preview features for it. Secondary sources currently disagree with each other about what the next Edition is even called, and speculation dressed up as reporting helps nobody.
What we would watch for: whether Shopify extends the local currency work into notifications and redemption UX, whether POS cash-out limits become configurable, and whether anything at all lands on the gifting side. That last one has been the quiet gap for years, and no 2026 release note has closed it yet.
In the meantime, the gap is fillable today. Install GoGiftCards from the Shopify App Store to add recipient delivery, scheduled sending, personalized messages, and branded redemption on top of everything Shopify shipped this year. Plans start at $4.99/mo with a 7-day free trial and no credit card required.
